Is tattooing a craft, or is it a free art? The DIY generation thinks they can do everything themselves, so why not tattoo? VICE went to Rotterdam to investigate the phenomenon of home tattooing. We spoke to Kristel ("Tattooing is a craft"), Karim ("This is part of my personal development") and Erik ("Anyone can draw a line"). We also visited a group of friends who see tattooing as a party game. In addition to the old hands in their sterile shop, there are also more and more 'home tattooers' who color you at home on the couch. It's a slap in the face to traditional tattoo artists, who see themselves as the guardians of the craft. But for anyone who doesn't want to spend years learning how to do it, taking a test at home is the way to go.
